Tennis / Golfer's Elbow

Elbow pain from gripping, lifting, or typing can grind your daily life to a halt. Whether it's lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) or medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow), a licensed PT can identify the problem and build a progressive loading program to fix it. All from home, covered by your insurance.

What is tennis / golfer's elbow?

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) are overuse injuries of the tendons that attach to the elbow. Tennis elbow affects the outside of the elbow and is common with gripping and wrist extension activities. Golfer's elbow affects the inside and is associated with wrist flexion and gripping. Both respond well to progressive loading through physical therapy.

Common symptoms

Pain on the outside (tennis) or inside (golfer's) of the elbow
Pain with gripping, twisting, or lifting
Weakness in grip strength
Pain that worsens with repetitive hand/wrist use
Morning stiffness in the elbow
Pain with typing or using a mouse
Tenderness when pressing on the elbow
Pain that radiates into the forearm

What causes tennis / golfer's elbow?

These conditions develop from repetitive loading of the forearm tendons — from activities like typing, gripping tools, racquet sports, weightlifting, or manual labor. The tendons become irritated and develop micro-tears that don't heal properly. Weak forearm and shoulder muscles, poor ergonomics, and sudden increases in activity are common contributors.

How virtual PT helps with tennis / golfer's elbow

1

Evaluation

Your PT assesses your elbow, forearm, wrist, and shoulder over video — testing grip strength, range of motion, and identifying which tendons are affected and what activities are aggravating them.

2

Treatment

The foundation of treatment is progressive tendon loading — starting with isometric exercises and gradually increasing to eccentric and heavy slow resistance exercises. Your PT also addresses contributing factors like workstation setup and shoulder mechanics.

3

Ongoing support

Message your PT between visits about pain levels during exercises and daily activities. The program progresses through clear loading phases.

What to expect

Your first visit is about 60 minutes over video. Your PT will determine which tendons are involved and start you on a loading program. Tendon injuries take time — expect 8-12 weeks for full resolution, though pain often decreases significantly within the first 3-4 weeks.
